Pay Equity Legal Update

May 30, 2019

Registration & Networking: 7:30 a.m.

Meeting: 7:50 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

Legal compliance with new pay equity laws is a growing area of concern in California due to the passage of the California Fair Pay Act and subsequent amendments. This law requires employers to go far beyond what is required under the Federal Title VII and Equal Pay Act laws.  Pay equity is also a growing area of legal development in other states and even local area ordinances have been passed.  Our presentation on pay equity issues last year was one of the best attended sessions.  This year’s program picks up where last year’s program left off. Our panel of three outstanding employment law attorneys will cover the following areas:

  1. New pay equity laws and recent amendments
  2. Review new pay equity litigation
  3. Provide practical advice on implications for compensation and HR management including  policy development, best practices in auditing, and best practices in taking corrective action
  4. Answer your questions about pay equity

We have added 30 minutes to our normal program time to allow for better coverage of this critical area of legal compliance. We recommend that those OCCABA members who did not attend last year’s pay equity presentation in January 2018 review the slides in our member’s only section of the OCCABA web site. You must be a member and log in to the web site to download this file.

Presenting at this meeting will be:

Jeff Ames - Partner with Paul, Plevin, Sullivan & Connaughton

Jeff Ames represents public and private employers in all aspects of labor and employment litigation, including the defense of employment class actions involving wage and hour claims, disparate impact discrimination, and WARN Act claims.  In addition to litigation, he regularly advises employers on daily employment-related issues including wage and hour compliance, employee terminations, leaves of absence and disability accommodation, and reductions in force, among others.  Jeff’s clients include telecommunications and technology companies, health care systems, and local and national retailers.

Jeff has extensive trial experience before judges, juries, and arbitrators.  After graduating from the University of Maryland School of Law, he served as a United States Navy Judge Advocate, where he successfully tried numerous cases before juries and judges.  He served as the Navy’s Senior Defense Counsel for Europe and Southwest Asia in Naples, Italy, and then as Special Counsel to the United Nations War Crimes Unit in Pristina, Kosovo.  Jeff later prosecuted federal crimes as a Special Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of California, and was the Evidence Instructor at the Naval Justice School in San Diego.  Since completing his military service, Jeff's practice has been dedicated to defending employers in litigation matters, and counseling employers on all aspects of their daily employment practices.
