As an organization, you are committed to achieving pay equity. However, a tight labor market is making hiring and retention challenging. The dilemma - attract the best talent but not at the cost of creating pay inequity. Can hiring practices impact pay equity? What could be some other deeper and layered issues? Does the tight labor market exuberate the problem and affect the disadvantaged group more than others? In this session, we’ll discuss some of the unique pay equity challenges in a tight labor market and holistic approaches that the companies can take to balance the best of both worlds

The first 10-15 minutes will discuss some of the key human capital challenges in a tight labor market – albeit hiring and retention. We will then explain how these challenges translate to pay and therefore could have a direct and immediate impact on pay equity. The vibe that we want to set up is that these We’ll then shift our focus to some of the other deeper issues like how inherent subconscious biases and pandemic could potentially affect the disadvantaged class more, ultimately hampering an organization’s efforts to achieve pay equity. The goal is to drive home the point that the issue of pay equity is broader than just pay. Therefore, it is necessary to think about it beyond just closing the gap.

We’ll involve the audience throughout, but especially at this stage to hear tips and experiences from people. A large room that we can walk around and hand the microphone to someone in is needed.

Our guest speakers will be: 

 Therese Sebastian, CEP - Associate Director at Equity Methods

As an Associate Director at Equity Methods, Therese supports clients with a wide variety of design, analytics, and valuation solutions for their compensation plans. Her main areas of specialization include M&A and spin-out transactions, equity award modifications, employee share purchase plans (ESPPs), compensation design modeling, and pay equity analysis.

Therese is known by her clients to provide effective solutions and an exceptional service experience in every project she leads through her flexibility and responsiveness. She prides herself on taking complex technical concepts and distilling them into plain-English, user-friendly content to generate actionable insights for clients.

Within Equity Methods, Therese is a key leader of many training, marketing, risk management, and process improvement initiatives. She is also a regular writer and presenter on equity compensation topics.

Therese holds a B.S. in Management Engineering with honors from the Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines and an MBA from the University of Arizona’s Eller College of Management, and is a Certified Equity Professional (CEP).


 Saswati Sen - Senior Consultant, Valuation & HR Advisory Services at Equity Methods

Saswati Sen is a Senior Consultant in the Valuation Services and HR Advisory Services practices at Equity Methods. Saswati leads and provides support in multiple projects focused on the valuation of various equity compensation instruments including options, relative TSR awards and equity-award modifications using Monte Carlo simulations, Lattice and Black-Scholes models. Saswati also assists with data-based analyses related to developing CEO pay ratio and other behavior assumptions for HR.

Prior to joining Equity Methods, Saswati worked in the manufacturing industry in the field of demand planning. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology from Barkatullah University, a Master of Business Administration from the University of Pune, and a Master of Science in Finance from Portland State University.
